Artwork reproduction records a work through controlled light, careful alignment and a defined colour workflow. The first question is whether the file is intended for documentation, publication or printing.
Why even lighting is essential
The first aim is an even record of the artwork, with light that reveals colour and surface without creating unwanted glare. Photograph a neutral reference under the same lighting and inspect corners as well as the centre. A textured painting may also need a separate detail made with directional light; that image serves a different purpose from a flat reproduction.
How perspective and geometry are corrected
Align the camera square to a flat work and keep its sensor plane parallel to the surface. Check all four edges before capture; correcting a strongly tilted view later discards pixels and can distort proportions. Record the complete edge when documentation requires it. Framed, sculptural or installed works may need additional views rather than one supposedly universal image.
What colour reference contributes
A colour target and consistent processing make comparisons more controlled. They do not guarantee that every screen or paper will match the original, particularly with metallic, fluorescent or highly glossy materials. Agree whether the priority is an archive, a publication or a reproduction print. For critical printing, review a proof under suitable light before approving the full run.

- Share dimensions, medium and surface information
- Decide whether the work will come to the studio or be photographed on location
- Remove glass where possible or flag glazed works in advance
- Clarify whether files are for archive, web, catalogue or print reproduction
