Why Is My Polaroid Photo Overexposed?

An overexposed Polaroid looks washed out, pale or nearly empty because too much light reached the film—or because the film was far more sensitive than the camera expected.

Quick diagnosis: Confirm the correct film type, move out of harsh direct sun, reset exposure compensation and test with fresh film in stable light.

Likely causes

  • 600 film was used in an unmodified SX-70 without a neutral-density filter.
  • The lighten/darken control was set too far toward lighten.
  • Strong sun struck a close reflective subject.
  • The exposure sensor was dirty, blocked or misreading the scene.
  • The shutter or camera electronics are ageing.
  • The film was heat-damaged before use.

Film mismatch matters

600 film is roughly four times more sensitive than SX-70 film. The cartridge may fit an SX-70, but the exposure will usually be too bright unless the camera or film pack is correctly filtered.

A useful test

Reset compensation to the centre. Use the film named inside the camera door and photograph a mid-tone subject in even daylight. Compare several frames rather than judging one unusual scene.

FAQ

Can I fix an overexposed original?

No, but a scan may recover mild highlight detail.

Does turning off flash prevent overexposure outdoors?

Sometimes, but many cameras balance flash automatically. Start by checking the manual and exposure control.

Why is only part of the photo pale?

Uneven chemistry or light reaching the film during early development can create local pale areas.

Keep the evidence

Do not throw away a failed photograph immediately. Bring the camera, the remaining film pack and examples to Berlin Photo Studio in Wedding. A pattern across several frames often reveals whether the cause is light, distance, temperature, rollers, chemistry or the camera.
